Zoutleeuw - A Town Brewed with History
Like other strategically interesting places in present-day Belgium, Zoutleeuw was a hotspot for military activity in the 17th and 18th centuries. Various battles took place over a period of barely 30 years, with one fight having more consequences than the other. The region had a constant military presence during that period, partly due to Zoutleeuw's role as a fortress.
Zoutleeuw, a Brabant border town located on the trade route from the Rhineland to the North Sea and transition to the Kleine Gete, acquired strategic significance due to its location. At the beginning of the 17th century, the central government in Brussels decided to fortify Zoutleeuw. The 14th-century city ramparts and walls of Zoutleeuw were reinforced from 1642 with a “bastioned system” of fortifications: with wide earth walls, moats, bastions, etc. In addition, the “Spanish citadel” was constructed in 1670-79.
We hope you enjoy our Vesting Range beers and cider, inspired by Zoutleeuw's fascinating history! Let's raise a glass to good times and making memories together!
Cheers to History - and Good Times!
